Chapter

Fourteen

“W hat’s Nick King doing here?” Michael asked, noticing the sheriff the same time I did. Nick was pacing around the front lobby, glancing at his watch. Emily Johnson, Nick’s ex-wife, entered with all the drama-queen air I would have expected to see.

“Oh lord,” I sighed. I wished Emily had moved out of town like Lewis’ family did, never to be heard from again. “What are those two doing?” Nick and Emily didn’t hug. They didn’t even shake hands. She kept a cool distance from him, like she was a Hollywood starlet irritated by one of her fans. Nick looked about as comfortable as a man who had to burp on a crowded elevator. The hostess grabbed two menus and proceeded to show them to their table. Nick motioned for Emily to go before him. The two sat at a small table on the opposite side of the dining room.

“I have no idea why those two ever got married,” Michael commented. “I’m surprised their marriage lasted as long as it did.”

I nodded. I didn’t know Nick that well in high school, but I certainly knew Emily. If a day went by when she didn’t take the opportunity to torment me, I’m sure she didn’t feel complete.

“Do you know why they got divorced?” I asked Michael.

He shrugged.

“I don’t really know either of them well,” he replied. “But I do know them well enough to guess Nick came to his senses.” I thought about the photo that fell from Nick’s wallet the night the two of us had dinner. I was sure he no longer had feelings for Emily. His body language certainly gave that away. But there must have been something about their relationship that he missed. “I can only imagine how unhappy Emily really is,” Michael said.

“Oh?”

“Think about it. She used to relish bullying everyone she knew in school, even the girls in her circle.” He nodded towards Nick and Emily’s table. “It looks like she still enjoys making people miserable.” I watched as Nick leaned forward, pounding his index finger on the table, punctuating whatever he was telling her. His neck was tense and his eyes narrowed. In short, he looked like I had just told him I was trying to get to the bottom of one of his cases.

“It’s a wonder she can keep any of her clients,” Michael said.

“Clients?” I asked. “What does she do?”

Michael chuckled and leaned forward.

“Real estate,” he replied. “I think she sells condos and second homes to people who want to be here for ski season.”

Nick stood up from the table and walked towards us, passing Michael and me as if he didn’t see us. He disappeared into the restroom, then reemerged several minutes later. When he passed by our table, he stopped to say hi to Michael, then noticed me sitting across from him. His glance shot back and forth between us.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to interrupt your… dinner?” he stuttered.

“Not at all,” Michael said. “We were just reminiscing about school.” He leaned back in his chair.
